Free to be thinking in a positive tone about our freedoms. Free to imagine a place where our leaders can be counted on. Free to believe that we can live together without fighting each other all the time. Free to think it is all possible.

We Arizonans are free to declare and follow through on a solemn promise to greater powers, to our communities, to the world at large and to ourselves that we are moving forward in equality for all.

Springtime in Anthem has an abundance of Saguaro cacti. I was amazed at the bursting crown of flowers that adorned the towering giants. When you focus on just the very top of the blooming Saguaro, it looks like a bouquet.

“Lifting Spirits” is a portrait of a woman decked out for Dia de los Muertos, a celebration of family members who have passed away.

Purple prickly pear cacti are abundant in Anthem. The beautiful colors of their yellow blooms and purple pads attracted my attention and complement the desert landscape.

This unique desert bloom only presents itself for 24 hours then wilts. It is a reminder that we must enjoy each day and what it brings.

The resilient desert in all its dry seasons and harsh conditions produce colors that remind us that there is always a new beginning. One single bloom can change our perception.

Arizona has an amazing history of neon art. Arizona Motel is part of that history.

The Horse Shoe Cafe opened in 1936 in Benson and will still serve you today with open arms. The sign that sits proudly above the establishment is classic neon.

This classic neon sign sat in front of the Navajo Motel in Prescott for many years. Another example of classic neon throughout Arizona.

The Kingman Club opened in 1944 and the sign was installed in the 1950s. The club still sits on Beale Street along the old Route 66 in downtown Kingman today.

I love Arizona — I love how it smells, I love the light, I love how it makes me feel. The goal of my photography is not to give you a realistic representation but to produce an image that communicates how I feel about the subject. There is no planning for my edits; I simply let the energy of the moment direct the story. Each photograph is printed on acid-free archival paper.

Arizona is very active in space exploration and research. The title is a nod to that. Free to be an artist.

Watching the purples, reds and blues explode across the skies during the first storm of monsoon season was awe-inspiring. In all my travels, I have never experienced such powerful beauty.

Arizona has many great libraries and bookstores. Having worked in a few, and as an avid reader, I know and appreciate these valuable resources to any community – they are the inspiration for “Garden of Literary Delights”. The air is crisp in the Sedona autumn, where the shimmering oak creek flows through Arizona’s iconic red rock formations.

Springtime showcases unexpected life in the desert, colorful and vibrant. This softer side contrasts the notion that everything in the Arizona desert is out to poke, hurt, or curse you.

Endemic to the Sonoran Desert, the gila monster chilling on a cholla skeleton is a rare and special sight for Arizona adventurers!

The artwork is freestyle and a little avant-garde.

This work was painted after a visit to the site. It is mixed media collage and acrylic. It is one of the only continuously occupied pueblos in Arizona. No pictures were allowed when I visited, but I was so struck with the spirit of it that I painted it from memory.

This was painted after seeing a documentary of Buffalo in Arizona. I was impressed with their freedom and beauty.

“A Galaxy of Metal” is a galaxy-style acrylic pour painting on a wood panel, featuring blacklight fluorescent and metallic paints, finished in epoxy resin with mica powder sparkle. It is a true example of how free form and natural fluid art can be. After all, what is more free than the unbridled beauty of a spiraling galaxy?

A nearly 5-foot long functional board, “Cosmic Aurora” features a color-shifting Dutch pour acrylic painting, sealed holographic vinyl logos, gold and silver metallic oil paint edges, finished in epoxy resin on the bottom and a clear, multicolor glow in the dark skate grip on top. Longboard dancing is a diverse and exhilarating pastime that is rapidly growing in Phoenix. There are even organized groups on social media for this local community. This board was made by a local boarder, perfect to dance around on and enjoy yourself by Tempe Town Lake at sunset.

When I don’t have words to describe the majesty of Mother Nature, I feel a painting emerging from my heart and soul. The process is transformative, since there is an innocent, deep desire to connect with energy that makes rock formations like this one on Tom’s Thumb Trail. This gigantic rock formation is right before you reach the top. Perhaps we are all attracted to the glory of infinite possibilities!

North Mountain, located in Phoenix, features many trails for hikers. The magical tree on top is growing from sheer rock, and whenever I pass it on my descent, I want to harness its power and “rise strong.”

This was part of several exhibitions around the U.S. and published in a couple of magazines. This art is about movement in every sense.

A woman is holding a rooster, possibly all she has or all that she can take with her. We see a red, exhilarating horizon behind her. She leaves her motherland, and she goes somewhere following her dreams. She hopes to meet freedom. I am an immigrant, so I perfectly know what is it. I moved to the U.S. a while ago, and this January I moved to Arizona to be free.

I painted this piece during the pandemic. It’s a fun play on a Wizard of Oz quote and the ruby red slippers along with my love for Arizona.

This painting is a fun play on the idea of sometimes liking what you shouldn’t.

What could be more idyllic than time alone immersed in nature creating a work of art, be it musical, visual or literary! In “Desert Dreams,” the cellist’s composition reflects the serenity found in this desert landscape. By integrating more than 30 layers of my photographic images with acrylic paint, textiles, feathers, laundry lint, beads and pencil shavings, I invite the viewer into a reclusive world of unbridled imagination in which emotional desires, dreams and unique experiences are conveyed onto canvas.

Arizona is filled with outdoor activities, and Four Peaks is used by many for hiking, off-roading, photographing and painting.

The Arizona desert is a playground for hunters, hikers, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts. The desert provides fruit from cacti and plants which are used for healing.

I personally like to paint from the nature of the desert, mountains and lakes in Arizona. The sunsets are incredibly beautiful and soothe one’s soul.

I can’t think of a more appropriate concept to address the theme #AZFreeToBe than these beautiful Salt River Mustangs. This was painted from a photograph used with permission from the late beloved Joel Pearson, one of a group of friends who lobbied for preservation of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, enjoyed year round by hikers in the region.

This piece was created with acrylic paint on gallery wrapped canvas. It is inspired by my move to Arizona in 2018, in which I seemingly found as an artist an entire universe here, and I could finally be completely present to any given moment.

Inspired from my youth as an Arizona native, in a family of nine, we would spend hours in the desert, chasing lightning and counting the sounds of the thunder before the lightning struck. This is one of a three-themed collection inspired by the City of Maricopa Arts program titled “Monsoon Madness”.

Women of all ethnicities make up our great state. They are teachers, artists, doctors, dancers, musicians, lawyers … all walks of life and all ages contribute the talents!

There are so many hands that have contributed to the richness of Arizona. Creative hands, hands that built the cities, ancient hands, pioneers’ hands, caring hands, hands of all cultures … timeless.

The challenge of breaking a vessel and then reassembling it might remind us of the challenges faced by many who choose to make Arizona their home and met the challenge.

One of my favorite places in the valley is the Desert Botanical Garden, a serene place to visit and explore the beauty and diversity of the desert. The garden celebrates each season with a variety of festivals, art exhibits, live music and cultural celebrations, all among the gorgeous plants. This painting was inspired in the spring, when many of the cacti and succulents were beginning to bloom.

One of my favorite places in the valley is the Desert Botanical Garden, a serene place to explore the beauty and diversity of the desert. The garden celebrates each season with festivals, art exhibits, live music and cultural celebrations. One day, I saw one of the most unusual plants I’d even seen: the boojum tree. Because of its unusual shape, it stirs the imagination … It is reminiscent of a Dr. Seuss landscape, and Lewis Carroll once even wrote a poem about this tree (The Hunting of the Snark).

The wild horses of the Salt River are a group of approximately 500 unbranded and free roaming horses living in the Tonto National Forest. In 2015, the US Forest planned to remove and dispose of them, but the public reacted and moved to save these beautiful animals. They are now protected and living along the lower Salt River and are a symbol of our national heritage. This painting is inspired by the spirit of the Salt River herd, living wild and free.

“Festival” is a composite image of photographic textures taken from the flora and fauna of Arizona. These images have been digitally processed and surface mapped onto the three-dimensional form of a flower blossom. To me, this image is the essence of the festivals and celebrations I have found in Arizona.

Prescott is a wonderful city, full of history, galleries and antique shops. Thumb Butte overlooks the city and is a popular hiking destination. When driving to Prescott, the first sight of the town is from this viewpoint, close to Prescott Gateway Mall. This watercolor is painted from my love for the City of Prescott and the wonderful people there.

This watercolor, showing a lone hiker on a winter morning, depicts the start of the trail up Shaw Butte, in Phoenix, from the Central Avenue trailhead. This is my local trail and is very popular in cooler months. The views from the top overlook the entirety of Greater Phoenix.

The must-see destination for any visitor to Arizona, the Grand Canyon is beloved by all. History, geology, activities; so much to do and see. One of my favorite spots worldwide, I visit again and again.

“Desert Pipes” honors the amazing array of beautiful cacti that we have all around us. Despite the stresses of everyday life, we are free to step outside and lose ourselves in the beauty of nature.

“Just a Sip” is a reminder that there is little we really “need” in life. Just a sip of nourishment and a safe place to sleep are beautiful gifts, and ones that we should appreciate each day.

Looking at this piece fills me with gratitude that we have such beautiful hummingbirds that help remind us to “just be”.

“Open Up a Little” was my thought as I walked around my home, looking at all the wonderful cacti blooming this spring. Each day, I would wake up excited to see what new blossoms would await me on my journey. “Open Up a Little” is also a reminder to interact with the people, places, and the things that are going on all around us. After being shut into our homes for so long, this piece provides a reminder that the glory of living exists outside of our homes too.

Long before I moved to the desert, my favorite bird had always been the long-legged roadrunner. Growing up with the antics of the beloved cartoon roadrunner probably inspired this love, but, years later, I still find I gravitate to these fun, quick, friendly fellows. Watching them sprint around the neighborhood is a joy, and I am thankful to live in a place where they flourish. Our amazing Arizona sunsets also inspired this piece. What a beautiful state we live in!

Sometimes in the early morning, when the sun is rising in the east yet casting shadows and light in all directions, it’s easy to be mesmerized in that moment, realizing that life is what we make it. I’m extremely fortunate to be free to create my oil paintings in any way I chose. When I created my first sunset in oil, I was 14 years old. Little did I know that my obsession with the sky and light would continue for the rest of my life.

Whether you are hiking or just walking in the neighborhood, you are sure to see the glorious spring prickly pear blooms. Locals anxiously await their arrival, signaling spring.

We were driving on Highway 79 on our way from Tucson to see the grandkids in Florence and passed by ruins. We noted the mile marker, and stopped on the way back home for photos.

“Heart of the Garden” is a cactus when living in AZ. My love for flowers and painting shines through in this piece. It was painted from a photo I took while walking in my neighborhood in Tucson by using acrylic paints, acrylic fiber paste, molding paste, slow drying medium, and matte medium was used to create this garden.

“Papa Quail” was looking out for his family while I stood there on my patio to take a photo of him. I loved the textures I saw on the dead branch versus the live branch behind him. Textured.

First Southwestern painting created while living in Gilbert. I love all the free beauty Arizona has to offer! Canvas Board figurative using palette knife technique with cold wax and oil glazing.

I was taking pictures at Horseshoe Park in Queen Creek when a mom yelled to her daughter, “Go ahead and pose for her.” She did and it was cute enough to paint. 140 lb. watercolor paper with gesso, acrylic paints with drips, matte medium, sand medium, topped with oil paint glazes, cold wax. This was donated to a Children’s Hospital auction.

We have a beautiful vastness to freely explore and dream of the past, present and what the future may hold.

When it was once again safe to enjoy Phoenix restaurants, I visited the Ocotillo, where I encountered this beautiful scene. This is a celebration of the beautiful moments we can only experience by engaging in person.

Each Friday morning, my husband and I enjoy a bagel and a sunrise stroll in one of our local parks. This palm tree portrait came from a walk at Kiwanis Park in Tempe. We see many kinds of Arizona people at Kiwanis and enjoy the junction of people and nature.

While camping under the Superstitions I captured this beautiful sunset shot of these majestic Saguaro cacti. They appeared to be watching, guarding the Valley from their elevated viewpoint. Living in the Greater Phoenix region allows for so many opportunities to get out and explore year-round.

I finished off this canvas printed photo with a vintage gold frame I found at an antique store. The colors of the frame play off the yellows in the sunset beautifully, making it the perfect statement piece.

My studio name – BYOB Artwork – stands for “backyard and outdoor beauty”, and my philosophy is that you can experience nature’s beauty just about anywhere! I am a part-year resident, and I just love the variety of wildlife here in Phoenix, even in the city and residential areas. Cactus wrens are some of my favorite birds, and I painted this pair from some reference photos I took right outside my home.

Abstract floral painted with bright vivid colors, energy and movement to bring joy into our lives. I am free to be me, as an artist to create, or to inspire others who view my work of bright expressive palette colors and my own artistic style. My hope is that it will bring some joy to others in our ever challenging world we live in.
