Virtual Art Exhibit

Greater Phoenix, Greater Together

Arizona is a state known for its rugged pioneering spirit, which became even more evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. While our entire planet faced new challenges never before experienced, the people of Greater Phoenix dug deep into their ancestral roots and came together in ways that will forever change the fabric of our community.

In our first-ever virtual art exhibit, we are showcasing pieces that archive the emotion and moments of support, compassion and togetherness that transpire across Greater Phoenix.

Scroll over each image to read the description and click on the title for a larger view. Contact the artists directly to purchase.

See the virtual tour here.

Together we will ignite the world. We will set the earth ablaze with our love. We will awaken the heavens in our passionate affection. You are mine and I am yours. Together we are infinite lovers in color.

La Niña represents the youth and diversity of cultures in our community.

We all need time to rest.

In Mexican culture, Dia de los Muertos celebrates deceased ancestors by placing their photos and other personal belongings on an ofrenda. On Nov. 1, it is believed the deceased ancestors visit their living family members and the decorated ofrenda. The loving connection between the woman in this portrait and her family transcends their mortal separation.

This portrait depicts a deceased wife who is visiting her living husband on Dia de los Muertos. She affectionately reaches out longing to touch him once again. Even though he can’t feel her touch, he knows she’s there. Their loving connection transcends their mortal separation.

These brightly colored cacti are gathered together for protection and strength in numbers. Even though we are all different, and might be a little prickly toward each other from time to time. We still need to lean on one another when things get hard.

When we explore the outskirts of our area we can find solace in a journey and come back to vibrancy.

This part of the series created for the Invitational 3 artist show for the Phoenix Zoo – Art on the Wild Side.  2/1/2020 – 1/6/2021. The show was closed with the zoo closure in March. All of the JoyEful Party Animals paintings are “quarantined” at the zoo. Several paintings sold thanks to my auction with a portion benefiting the Phoenix Zoo. Just like the Phoenix, nothing will defeat us if we think creatively!

The fur on this full-figure bear was a fun challenge. I thought I was in the home stretch with the water. Not so much. I ended up getting lost in the splashing water and reflections. Then I decided the background needed to be reworked. After pushing back the background, I needed to touch up the edges of the fur on the bear. I saw and mentally worked on this painting all day and in my dreams!

My daughter suggested the title, which fit my thoughts perfectly.

One of my favorite legends is the story of the good and bad wolves. We have the choice of which one we feed. It is a good reminder for me when I’m in “art hermit mode” spending time alone with my thoughts.  My Dutch name DeGoede translates to “the good.”

I love seeing bobcats outside of my studio window. The titled Spotted Bob can be be interpreted two ways. “Spotted” implies seeing or it can be a reference to Bob’s spotted coat.

According to Shawnee lore, the bobcat got his spots due to an encounter with a rabbit that he chased into a tree. The wily rabbit suggested that the bobcat build a fire in order to be ready to start cooking. Once the fire was going, the rabbit jumped down and sent sparks flying. Embers landed on the bobcat, leaving the spots.

My model is one of the ambassador animals at the Phoenix Zoo. He is an Eurasian Eagle Owl named “Archie,” short for Archimedes. He was hatched in June 2005 at the World Bird Sanctuary located near St. Louis. The Phoenix Zoo acquired Archie in 2009 as an ambassador animal. I met Archie at the Art on the Wild Side Exhibit at the Phoenix Zoo.

The painting is about a diverse group of individuals crossing paths in an imaginary “bus” ride.

This young lad and is loyal pup represent the precious bond that exists between children and their pets. The love of animals and care given them through the support of animal groups and shelters in the Greater Phoenix area is one of the greatest treasures offered here.

I took the photo reference for this painting at the Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) celebration at the Phoenix Botanical Garden. The Garden offers so many opportunities for artists to obtain reference materials in beauty and historic cultures. This dancer exudes the joy of the Greater Phoenix area!

The Guest House is a 13th-century poem by sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi in which a guest house is used to describe life’s journey. Rumi’s poetry is sublime and eloquent, and it makes us appreciate the uncertainty of life and embrace mindful living. Of the guests we are and become. Artist Charlene Falk interprets and responds to Rumi’s poem and the contemporary currents of living in a new series also titled “Guest House”. This new series is evocative, sensual, and mindful of the guests we are and become.

There are two blessings that join all Phoenicians: our sunrises and our sunsets. The colors of these phenomena are like no other place on earth. If we could stand in a place of gratitude and prayer at each sunrise and sunset, we would be a beacon of strength. This image is my interpretation of a sunset.

This is the companion piece to Arizona Mountain. It reflects the sacred image of a Phoenix sunrise. We are Greater Together when we honor the simple gifts of our Phoenix life.

“Phoenix Flames” embraces a fire motif with red, pink and gold embers burning against the charcoal black background.

This composition captures the burning wings of the phoenix rising triumphantly from the ashes. The phoenix bird is such an apt name sake for this city – through up and and downs, we all rise together.

“I have a need to be all on fire, for I have mountains of ice about me to melt.” – William Lloyd Garrison

Phoenicians are relentless in our pursuit of our passions and causes that are dear to our hearts. Maybe it’s our ever-present companion the Sun that helps fuel our pioneering spirit and our fire to melt those mountains of ice that serve as obstacles in our life.

“Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire.”

In Arizona, we take advantage of our many days of sunlight to let it drive our passions and our pursuits. When I look at this composition, I see a human soul in flames – not burning to ash, but burning with life and energy and passion.

Hot air balloons floating across the desert sky is a fairly common thing to see here in the valley. In real life, female journalist and feminist innovator Nellie Bly took a trip around the world in less than 80 days to prove that a woman could do it, in spite of what Jules Verne said to her about it being “impossible in real life.”

A Navajo woman is seen here weaving baskets that will be used by others in her community to bring the tribe together.

At the time of painting this piece, I got really sick but was in the middle of organizing an online art show with The Millet House. The exhibit was set to showcase artists from around the valley to help them continue to sell their work even during the pandemic. Thriving Hummingbird is representative of the resilience we must have, even during times of hardship in order to thrive.

Desert Reef was painted when our family postponed a trip to San Diego while we were still trying to figure out how to handle the coronavirus situation. I was so thirsty to feel the ocean water and breeze but also concerned about community responsibility. Painting the desert became my ocean reef replacement, and I can still feel the surge of the surf looking at this painting.

I hope it makes people feel peaceful.

Happy as a Clam was painted in response to all the civil unrest happening in some of our larger cities across the country. I felt quite fortunate and extremely grateful to be living in my Phoenix community. The painting is a reflection of both city and suburban life in harmony.

A little southwest humor to sum up my feelings about looking for a job during quarantine.

Every element in this piece is beautiful in its own way. Each holds its own story, its own mystery, its own adventure. It is only when they combine to create this tableau, you truly experience the wonder of nature. Each element retains its individuality, but they are, in essence, much Greater Together.

This year, our high school graduates endured much stress with the pressures to transfer to online learning combined with quarantine isolation from classmates and teachers. To show our small group of seniors how proud we were of them, teachers and office staff drove through the neighborhoods in a slow procession of cars, honking and waving homemade signs of glitter on poster board.  On that day, we overcame the challenges of social distancing to show our unity as a school.

In this time of pandemics, social reform and societal change, I have found it necessary to look at what is possible, even in difficult moments. This canvas tryptic, Peace Love and Happiness, is positive and thought-provoking in a transitional style combining spray paint and stencils with more traditional brushwork and luminous pearlescence. The sapphire, ruby and peridot colored canvases combine together to display a mandala incorporating petals of lotus, rose and sunflower. It encourages the viewer to enjoy a meditative moment of reflection.

As part of a Phoenix Water Department and Office of Arts & Culture partnership initiative, I worked collaboratively with Dig Studio to design a set of sculptural arches and a winding, landscaped path using local high school students’ expressed desires for their walk to school as foundational concepts. Through this endeavor, we returned a defunct well site to its community as enjoyable public space.
