Greater Phoenix’s First Friday is such a vibrant display of culture and community. Walking through the streets, I feel connected to everything – bigger than myself. This portrait, with vibrant colors and growing inner eyes, represents this sensation.

Since moving to Greater Phoenix, I find myself spending as much time outside as I can. While hiking one of the many local trails – music in my ears, a breeze on my face – I felt a wave of serenity and inspiration. This portrait represents that moment.

This photo was taken at the Parada del Sol in Scottsdale, Arizona. It’s representative of the cowboy culture of the southwest.

This illustration combined with collage, is a representation of First Friday on Roosevelt Row. After moving to Phoenix, this event became my favorite to attend. The movement, meeting new people, art, food and music – everything in one place.

Hiking in Arizona is an experience that invites you to see colors where you did not imagine they would be, a constant discovery. This landscape was inspired by a Louis Cantillo photo.

“Faces of Diversity” was created as an acrylic pour. To me, it represents all of the diverse ethnic cultures here in the Phoenix metro area. If you look closely, you can see various faces within this beautiful painting.

A still Colorado river gently flows through a passage beneath the grandiose walls of rock in the Grand Canyon. I painted it in lavender hues of diffused sunlight.

I went to see a friend in Prescott and took a little ride to Watson Lake, Granite Dells where so many movies have been shot due to the incredible rock formations.

Montezuma’s Castle consists of ancient ruins that are easy to get to. After a car ride and a gentle sloping walk down a path, I was filled with the wonder of people who lived in the desert during ancient times.

In Phoenix we look for water. This piece is based on a friend’s backyard pool. I photographed the yard and combined it in a completed composition, highlighting the basketball hoop, since the owner played basketball at UA.

All of my work represents the emotions and sense of being I get, living in the beautiful and rich environment of Arizona. The sun, nature, trees, and the rebirth of it all after a winter freeze, are all captured in this piece depicting Phoenix.

I went to Roosevelt Lake to watch the bass fishermen get ready to go out for a tournament. I love the “first light” of the day, when the animals are out collecting their food, birds are singing, lizards and turtles are capturing the sun.

As an artist living in Arizona, I spend a lot of time out in nature. This is a view just a few miles from my home. Roosevelt lake has an abundance of wildlife, wild flowers, cactus and is a beautiful lake. I enjoy painting it both plein air and in studio.

This is a painting from the mountains between the valley and where I live. I love the drive and often stop to take photos to use as a reference when in the studio. The mountains change due to the sky colors and cloud formations. Just beautiful.

Phoenix was once known as one of the West’s most Polynesian towns. With the return of the WWII vets from the Pacific, tiki bars were popping up all over the valley. Drinking tropical drinks has been a long standing pastime of the valley.

“Lady in the Wind,” is a photograph I took of the well known abstract rock formation found in Arizona’s iconic Antelope Canyon. Exploring outdoor attractions around the state is easily one of my favorite pastimes.

3D Wearable Art

“Czardas” is an expressionist painting named for a traditional Hungarian dance. Public pastimes – such as group dances – strengthen our humanity and bring joy to our communities.

“White Noise” is an expressionist painting representing a perception of sound. Like Phoenix, a collection of different sounds creates a unique environment.

Desert gardening in Phoenix is very rewarding. After a rain, the Night-blooming Cereus cactus has spectacular blossoms that last for one night and bees make the most of the time they are open.

The great weather from the rising sun, broadcasts a lot of colors that helps our soul heal. Life is self healing so all we can do is stay healthy.

The spirit of the Okemah community of Phoenix, was founded by Black migrants from Oklahoma and Texas, who were recruited to work farmland south of the Salt River. Okemah were among the few Black groups that could buy property.

Right here, right now.

A favorite pastime is hiking near Arizona Snowbowl outside of Flagstaff during the fall. The Aspens are not only colorful, you get a sense that the eyes on their trunks are watching as you meander among them.

A favorite hike for many people is the Bell Rock trail in Sedona. In early summer when the yuccas are blooming they seem to sway like music singing to Bell Rock.

The serenity of Phoenix in the past, attached so many people, now living in peace.

This drawing is of the wild horses found near the Salt River. Seeing them in the wild and watching their interactions is a huge part of Arizona pastimes.

Not too many people outside of Phoenix realize there is Horse Racing here in the Valley! Here is a piece created in my original style of a Derby race. It is line art with many colors creating a background and the subjects.

Depicts the last catch of the day. Fisherman in a small boat is headed home from a day on the lake as the sun sets. Image study is from a camping trip at Dogtown Lake outside of Williams, Arizona.

“Move Over! Pet Me First!” is an oil painting, 20”W x 16”H. Dozens of donkeys roam the area and town of Oatman, Arizona and you can see them sticking their heads through old chewed wood fences trying to get noticed first.

The constant changing emanating celestial light. One of Roberts sources for inspiration comes from where the intangible horizon line meets with the sky and land.

Dreamscapes is made of 100% natural cotton cord. The design evokes the texture and patterns of the Sonoran Desert landscape, use of natural cotton cord speaks to the region’s commitment to sustainability. Macrame is a pastime art brought back to life.

This beautiful painting is done using fluid art technique with an epoxy resin coating on top, thus giving it a glossy and shiny look. Hot air balloon rides are one of the popular pastime activities found in Greater Phoenix.

This painting is inspired by Picacho State Park hiking trails, which I visited recently. The California poppies and wild flowers added to the wonderful experience of hiking. Hiking is an ideal activity to indulge in during the cooler Arizona seasons.

The Greater Phoenix area is cultivating a vibrant drag scene. Here, one of its luminaries, Benaddiction, prepares for a show at BS West.

This piece consists of rust colored slate, red and yellow marble, gray and black slate cut into small pieces, and shades of orange and turquoise smalti glass. The pattern was designed to flow randomly. To me, it looks like an aerial view of the Arizona desert landscape.

This piece was made with rust colored slate, burnt orange tumbled rocks, orange and red stained glass, orange, red and yellow filati, and yellow and purple slate shards. This piece reminds me of the Arizona sun setting behind a mountain.

Located on land within the Navajo Nation, Antelope Canyon has been shaped by millions of years of water and wind erosion. The splendid canyon was named for the Pronghorn Antelope that once roamed the area.

Dobbins lookout was my first outing in Phoenix, on November 13th, 2021 – it has a spectacular view from the highest peak point (2330ft elevation). It was a memorable experience to visit the largest urban park (16,283 acres) in the world and have a phenomenal view of the city.

One of my favorite Greater Phoenix pastimes is having a beer and a pasty at the Cornish Pasty Co in Mesa. “The Cajun” is a fun little oil painting showing my appreciation to Dean Thomas, the Cornish immigrant who opened this gem in the Phoenix area.

Bird watching is one of my newest pastimes and the Desert Botanical Gardens is an excellent location in Greater Phoenix to spot a European starling sitting atop a Saguaro cactus – singing its tune for an audience of captivated desert dwellers.

The cactus wren was officially recognized as the Arizona state bird in 1931. Bird watchers looking to pass the day away can stroll through the Desert Botanical Gardens to spot one of these cute little feathered friends.

This drawing was created with colored pencils. It is an abstract, imaginary landscape that draws upon the shapes, forms, colors and composition of our western landscapes.

The cowboys “punching cattle” along the AZT remind me of a song called “Diamond Joe.” As I hike with this tune in my head my subconscious works to recognize old and acknowledge new memories, building a cache inside the structure of my mind.

I think about the places I take family to visit and chill. There are great places to go shopping, to eat food and just be in great company. In this piece I wanted to capture the water tower in downtown Gilbert which has become a symbolic landmark for the area. All towns in Arizona have their little moments.

One of my favorite pastimes is hiking. It helps me view things differently. So when I go hiking, I just love it. When I get back to my studio, I try to capture that beauty that surrounded me in my artwork.

One of my favorite pastimes is hiking different paths around Phoenix and seeing all the cactus blooming.

The outdoor lawn party is over, and the ravens have dropped in to see if there are any leftovers to scavenge. Ravens are the largest of all songbirds and thought by many to be the smartest of all birds.

What’s a more relaxing pastime in the beautiful Arizona weather – at the end of a day – than sinking into an all-weather barcalounger – cold beer or iced tea in hand – watching butterflies flit around the burbling backyard fountain?

What could be more exciting as an outdoor pastime in Arizona, than putting on your bikini and cowboy hat and hopping down the street on a stick horse? Or watching someone in a bikini and cowboy hat hopping down the street on a stick horse?

Growing up, I played croquet on the lawn with friends and family. With water in Arizona becoming an increasingly scarce commodity, residential lawns are steadily giving way to different landscaping. Lawn croquet and croquet players may be a dying breed.

My favorite family moments in Arizona are tied to the Museum of Natural History. The dilophosaurus exhibit is our favorite ever since learning about the skeletons found in Northern Arizona. This painting is named for my son’s stuffed dilophosaurus.
