Arizona artist spotlight: Goldwoman

Meet Phoenix-based artist Goldwoman featured in our Spirit of Greater Phoenix Exhibit

What do you find most rewarding about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?

In addition to the angle of light, big sky, saguaro cacti, red rock formations, myriad hiking trails and continuous sources of inspiration for artistic expression, I feel supported and encouraged to participate in the Phoenix art scene, which is expansive and inclusive. I am a member of the Arizona Artists Guild, The Artists’ Breakfast Club, ArtTHENA, Shemer Art Center and Artlink. Through these organizations, and beyond, I enter shows and sell my art. In addition, I have been an active docent at the Phoenix Art Museum for eight years; consequently, I am immersed in art, publicly and privately, and feel blessed daily.

How do you perceive the role of arts and culture in our community?

Art provides a visual vocabulary that reflects our culture and diversity. It stimulates deeper awareness, enhances the way we see the world, and often provides a sense of beauty despite turbulent times. Phoenix features public art that unites us in every quadrant of the city.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?

I would encourage aspiring artists to get out there: go to museums, galleries, First and Third Fridays, join groups (especially Artlink), engage in social media, learn the business of art (either online or in a course), enter competitions and “Call for Artists” opportunities. Also, I believe that you feel like an artist when you are producing art as a priority in your life (many days a week). “Just do it.”

If you could have dinner with any famous artist—living or deceased—which local restaurant would you take them to?

I would love to have dinner with Georgia O’Keeffe at Different Pointe of View (at Tapatio Cliffs).

When you encounter a creative block, where do you usually seek inspiration?

I go hiking in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve on Brown’s Ranch Trail, Tom Thumb’s Trail or Sunrise Trail.
