Meet Lakeside-based artist Jessica Rae Ecker featured in our Perspectives of Greater Phoenix Exhibit

How does Greater Phoenix influence your art?

I was born in the Phoenix area and grew up here for a good portion of my childhood. I have always loved exploring the desert mountain landscapes; they draw me back whenever I leave. I think it’s the sensory combination of the color, smell, and feel. The rocks emit an energy that is unobtainable anywhere else. I think only people who have spent time here really understand it. I try to express this connection of the landscape to the ethereal in my artwork.

How do you perceive the role of arts and culture in our community?

I lived in South Scottsdale when I was a kid, back when the average home price was lower than the national average, not higher, and when the coolest place to hang out in Old Scottsdale was the Sugar Bowl (at least for a 10 year-old). I remember going to the Scottsdale Arts Festival every year and taking field trips to the Civic Center. In those spaces, and at that time, everything felt accessible; I could be a part of those communities; I was welcome, even as a child. This laid the foundation for me to believe that I could be a part of them as an adult as well. Creating community arts and cultural spaces, such as these, where people have access and feel welcome is essential to growing the community and inspiring development.

What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?

The advice I’d give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene would be to just show up. Show up and apply. That’s the whole secret.

If you could teleport anywhere in Greater Phoenix for an instant creativity boost, where would be your go-to?

I have two go-tos. I used to hike in the Superstitions quite frequently as a child. The formations of the rocks bring me inspiration as do the connections with memory. I also (as shown in the show) enjoy visiting Arcosanti; it’s such a unique and motivating artistic community and architectural space.

What’s the best art/creativity-focused piece of advice you’ve received?

Assume you don’t know. Always be open to learning.
