Meet Tempe-based artist Rae Wilson featured in our Spirit of Greater Phoenix Exhibit
What do you find most rewarding about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?
I find that the most rewarding part of being an artist in Greater Phoenix is knowing that there is still so much room for growth here, and that my various identities represent so many people.
How do you perceive the role of arts and culture in our community?
The role of arts and culture in our community is vital. I think that art connects us all, especially in places where inhabitants are spread out or can feel geographically distanced, art stands in the gaps.
What advice would you give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene?
The advice I’d give to aspiring artists looking to engage with the local art scene would be to just show up. Show up and apply. That’s the whole secret.
If you could have dinner with any famous artist—living or deceased—which local restaurant would you take them to?
I would love to have dinner with Norman Rockwell, I’d take him to Ramen Kagawa.
When you encounter a creative block, where do you usually seek inspiration?
Whenever I encounter a creative block I find inspiration in viewing local art – sometimes that means a quick trip to a local gallery or Phoenix Art Museum.
