Meet Mesa-based artist Zybrena Porter featured in our exhibit Greater Phoenix Pastimes

What do you love most about being an artist in Greater Phoenix?

There is no lack of community if you are an artist. Almost everyone here seems to be involved in some aspect of artistry or possess a deep appreciation for the arts.

What role do you think arts and culture plays in our community as a whole?

I think it is a strong community builder, not only for artists but also for the causes that different artists represent. Art plays a crucial role in connecting the needs of a community with partners who can assist in fulfilling those needs.

What advice do you have for artists wanting to get involved in the local art scene?

Just do it. Draw, paint, sculpt, sing, dance, speak. Always remember there is a place for what you bring to the table. Find one or more of the many art centered groups out here in the valley, and meet people to learn about the different ways they got involved in the local art scene. Most importantly, find a cause that is close to your heart, and create from that space.

What famous artist, deceased or living, would you most want to have dinner with, and what local restaurant would you take them to?

Easy answer: Kehinde Wiley! And I would take him to Afternoon Tea at the Phoenician. The view of Phoenix is supreme and the pace of the service is perfect for conversation.

When you’re in a creative slump, where do you turn to for artistic inspiration?

Books! I love reading because a good author can sculpt entire scenes with their words, giving me countless angles from which to draw inspiration.
