Why it matters: The region has attracted more than $300 billion in semiconductor investment alone, plus millions more in bioscience and aerospace expansion. But capital alone doesn’t grow an ecosystem. You also need people ready to do the work.
Greater Phoenix has built a skilled labor pipeline that compresses workforce readiness from years to weeks, with parallel on-ramps like free bootcamps, paid apprenticeships, and traditional degrees, engineered to match industry’s exact skill needs.
Semiconductors
TSMC, Intel and Amkor have made the region the most heavily capitalized chip corridor in the U.S., and are developing programs with education leaders to train new qualified workers.
- The K-12 cleanroom: West-MEC opened the nation’s first K-12 advanced manufacturing cleanroom at its Northeast Campus, built in partnership with TSMC, Intel and Amkor. High schoolers train in a real cleanroom environment on equipment mirroring actual fab conditions, with the district projecting roughly 250 technicians a year once the program is at full capacity.
- The real-equipment classroom: GateWay Community College’s Future48 Workforce Accelerator is a purpose-built training facility co-designed with Intel and TSMC. Students train on the same state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment they’ll use on the job.
- The no-cost fast track: ASU’s Foundations for Equipment Technician Program gets people fab-ready in as little as 5 weeks. It’s free for anyone with just a high school diploma or GED, with ASU and TSMC splitting the cost. Graduates get a guaranteed TSMC interview and a portable industry credential.
- The paid path: TSMC’s Registered Apprenticeship Program, backed by a $5 million TSMC commitment through the Phoenix Workforce Hub, pays salary and benefits to apprentices from day one., .
- The grad-school upgrade: For those going the degree route, ASU’s graduate Semiconductor Processing program runs out of MacroTechnology Works, alongside NanoFab, the Eyring Materials Center, and the Applied Materials/ASU Materials to Fab Lab. Grad students get hands-on access to industrial-grade fabrication tools most universities can only describe in a textbook.
Bioscience & Healthcare Innovation
Anchored by the Phoenix Bioscience Core, TGen, Mayo Clinic and Banner Health, the bioscience and healthcare pipeline starts in K-12 and goes through graduate programs.
- The two-decade head start: Helios Scholars at TGen just hit a meaningful: 20 years of providing research lab access and mentorship to students, making it one of the longest-running teen-to-career science pipelines in the state.
- The full-spectrum exposure: In TGen’s Bioscience Leadership Academy, students get lab shadowing, clinical trials, bioethics and genomic medicine education, plus training in science communication and public speaking.
- The medical school built around engineers, not just doctors: ASU’s John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering is built so every graduate earns a dual M.D. and Master of Science in medical engineering. It plans to admit its first class of students in the 2026-27 academic year, following a $50 million investment from the City of Phoenix, its largest single direct investment in a bioscience project.

Boeing, Honeywell, and a dense cluster of MRO and defense-research operations around Greater Phoenix’s airports add layers of education from high school through classified defense research to the pipeline.
- The K-12 head start: East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) runs more than 40 occupation-specific programs for high schoolers and adults, including aviation and precision manufacturing tracks. That puts teenagers on a career path years before they’d normally enter the workforce.

- The degree-optional route: Boeing’s 12-week paid fellowship and 3-year apprenticeships give people hands-on aircraft experience. Its tuition assistance program pays the institution directly, so workers can stack credentials without fronting the cost.
- The university engineering anchor: ASU Polytechnic offers aerospace-focused degrees in Aerospace, Mechanical, and Industrial Engineering, and helps anchor Arizona’s NASA Space Grant Consortium alongside the University of Arizona: a research-and-STEM pipeline built to feed the industry directly.
- The classified-cleared research lab: Adjacent to Mesa Gateway Airport sits AZLabs, a former Air Force Research Laboratory that still holds Department of Defense security accreditations, giving the region a workforce pipeline into cleared, classified defense work most metros can’t offer.
