A conversation with Rei Carvalho, Emailage’s chief executive officer and founder

Tell us about your company:

Rei Carvalho: Emailage is redefining digital identity. We harness the power of the email address to help our customers balance effective fraud detection with great customer experience. Companies across the globe use our predictive scoring on transactions of all types. Our network’s constant growth enables 90% of fraud detected to be driven by attributes coming from our proprietary algorithms.

Among over 1,000 customers who rely on Emailage for email risk assessment and digital identity verification, are four of the six largest issuing banks in the United States., five of the top 10 eCommerce retailers, three of the five biggest global airlines, the top three computer manufacturers and the top five P2P money transfer companies. Additionally, many more are part of the network through partnerships with the five largest anti-fraud platforms. Our founders moved to Chandler several years ago and started the company here in 2012.

How did you come up with the idea for your company?

Carvalho: We are the only company in the world that does email risk assessment for fraud prevention. I identified the opportunity to change the entire fraud landscape by collecting email address history and creating ways to assess the risk of any transaction associated with an email address, and then created a global network for companies to share that data.

What makes your product/technology unique and different?

Carvalho: Our network’s constant growth enables 90% of fraud detected to be driven by attributes coming from our proprietary algorithms. Previously, companies relied on siloed internal technologies and databases to incorporate email into their fraud tools. This consisted of manual processes, one-to-one comparisons and maintenance of internal blacklists. Emailage changed the fraud landscape by breaking these silos with unparalleled global coverage and a commitment to uniting businesses in the fight against fraud. Since 2012, we have mitigated over $2.8 billion in fraudulent purchases demonstrating our widespread adoption, groundbreaking solution and effective approach to fighting online fraud.

Why is Greater Phoenix such a great place to develop, implement and scale this technology?

Carvalho: We are very proud to have our corporate headquarters in Chandler, Arizona. Despite immense pressure from our investors and from Silicon Valley to move, we choose to stay here in Arizona. We want to set a good example and prove that a small but impactful global company can be successful in Arizona’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.

Explain why you chose Greater Phoenix to grow your company.

Carvalho: We pride ourselves on hiring local talent. Many of our Chandler team calls Arizona State University their alma mater or are currently attending, including five PhDs and several Thunderbird graduates.

What is the best thing about having your business in Greater Phoenix?

Carvalho: It’s an amazing place to not only grow a business but our employees have a great quality of life too. That’s very important to us as a company.

What are three words you would use to describe the tech community in Greater Phoenix?

Carvalho: Growing, innovativevibrant

In your opinion, why should someone build a tech career in Greater Phoenix?

Carvalho: It’s great to be part of a growing supportive community. Greater Phoenix has so much to offer those in and around the tech sector.
