Resident Director, Barrow Innovation Center
Baltazar Zavala is currently a 5th-year Neurosurgery Resident at the Barrow Neurological Institute and the Resident Director of the Barrow Innovation Center. Originally from El Paso, TX, Baltazar graduated from Harvard in 2011, where he majored in the two fields he is still passionate about today, Biomedical Engineering and Neurobiology. After college, he was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to complete his PhD at the University of Oxford. His Ph.D. work focused on using Deep Brain Stimulation surgery to record electrical signals deep inside patients’ brains in order to understand how the Basal Ganglia contribute to movement and cognition. He subsequently completed his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University prior to beginning his neurosurgical residency training. At the Barrow Neurological Institute, Baltazar is able to treat patients with debilitating brain and spine disorders using state-of-the-art facilities and techniques. As the Resident Director of the Innovation Center, he is also leading the efforts to develop new devices and acquire scientific insight that will help neurosurgeons provide even better care in the future.
