GPEC recognizes regional contributors for exemplary service to Greater Phoenix

Mayo Clinic, Sky Harbor Airport, Oscar De las salas, Bill Gates and Neil Irwin honored during GPEC’s 35-year anniversary event
PHOENIX (Oct. 31, 2024) — During its 35-year anniversary event on Oct. 18, the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) recognized regional leaders who have demonstrated exceptional service in impact, partnerships, collaboration and long-term dedication to Greater Phoenix.
These honorees have contributed significantly to the advancement of the region during the history of GPEC, which over its 35 years has helped more than 1,000 businesses expand into Greater Phoenix, resulting in over 190,000 jobs and $69.4 billion in capital investment.
GPEC, with heartfelt thanks, recognizes the following for their impact on Greater Phoenix:
Community Impact Award: Mayo Clinic
By expanding access and equity to healthcare across Greater Phoenix, Mayo Clinic has accelerated the region’s standing in medtech innovation and the biosciences. The organization’s involvement in Discovery Oasis, the MedTech Accelerator, and the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Tech Hubs grant, among leadership in healthcare and education, has helped Greater Phoenix’s economy evolve and diversify. A special thank you to Dr. Richard Gray, M.D., who has worked closely with GPEC for several years including service on the Board of Directors.

Regional Contribution Award: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
Greater Phoenix could not have emerged as an international economic hub without the high-quality services and strategic growth of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. As a massive economic engine, Sky Harbor is integral in shaping the region’s future and now offers 25 direct international flights including additions to Paris, Frankfurt, Tijuana and Toronto this year. GPEC also recognizes and thanks Aviation Director Chad Makovsky and Air Service Development Manager Alexandria Van Haren for their involvement in the organization and Van Haren’s contributions to GPEC’s International Leadership Council.

Distinguished Service Award: Bill Gates, Maricopa County Board of Supervisors
As Supervisor Gates’ tenure of service with Maricopa County comes to a close, GPEC recognizes him for his many years of dedication that have improved the lives of millions of residents while strengthening the region. His public service has been instrumental to Greater Phoenix’s success, and the region is grateful for his service.

Georgia Lord Ambassador of the Year: Oscar De las salas, Gensler
GPEC’s award for Ambassador of the Year, selected by members of the organization’s Certified Ambassador network, goes to Oscar De las salas, Client Relationships Manager at Gensler. His dynamic advocacy, positivity, and presence at a wide variety of events has made him a key fixture of the region, one who works tirelessly for its growth and improvement.
